The following works for JFW 3.2 and 3.3 with K1000 4.0 using the Dectalk
Express synthesizer.
Use a software synthesizer while making the modification.
Reboot when done to avoid a conflict in SSILEXE.EXE.
Two files must be copied from C:\Program Files\Common Files\Kurzweil
Educational Systems\ to C:\JFW3X\ (assuming C: is the drive the JFW and
K1000 are installed on).
The JFW.INI file must be edited to recognize the file (DTE.DLL) which you
will use in lieu of the original file (DTE.JLS).
1. Navigate to the C:\JFW3X folder, locate the 6KB file designated SSIL.DLL
and rename it (SSIL.DL_).
2. Navigate to the C:\Program Files\Common Files\Kurzweil Educational
Systems folder, locate the 13KB file designated SSIL.DLL and copy it to the
C:\JFW3X folder.
3. Navigate to the C:\Program Files\Common Files\Kurzweil Educational
Systems\SSIL Drivers folder and copy the 13KB file designated as DTE.DLL to
the C:\JFW3X folder.
4. Using a text editor such as Notepad, open C:\JFW3X\JFW.INI, navigate to
the [Synthesizers] section, locate the entry that starts with
"Synth#Name=dte", then arrow down to the entry "Synth#Driver=dte" and edit
that line to "Synth#Driver=ssil".
5. Close the text editor, save the changes and reboot the computer.
You can now Alt+ Tab in and out of K1000 with JAWS running without conflict.
If you have not configured JAWS to enter the "Sleep" mode, open K1000,
press Insert+ Number row 6, followed by Alt+ S, then the letter A. Now,
check "SleepMode", press Enter, then exit the configuration file and save
the changes.
JAWS responds slightly slower after the change has been made, but the
effect is minimal.
