First Let me say I am using MS Outlook2000 with JFW33. I don't know if this would work in outlook97 or not. This is how I find them. First I send myself a message with an attachment to practice on. . When I get a message and open it, if there is an attachment it doesn't say anything. When this happens, I hit enter at the header of the selected message and once it's opened, do a shift tab six times which takes you backwards through the subject, bcc, cc, from and to fields. the one right before the to field will say attachments, list view and name the attachment. At that point, you can click on it to open it or save it to disk. If you try to find it by going forward through the fields, it doesn't work.
