Except that JAWS runs on the Windows operating system and JAWS for DOS runs
on the DOS operating system not under UNIX or LINUX or OS/2 or the MAC. or
CP/M or VIC20 or CMS for mainframes...
UNIX is a very powerful operating system, quite old now and usually operated
from a terminal on mini computers. Many if not most of the machines on the
Web are UNIX machines though more will be WINDOWS based, mostly WINDOWS is
not reliable enough.
All of your favorite protocols like SMTP, FTP, TELNET, POP3 HTTP are part
of the UNIX operating system, Microsoft might lead you to believe that
e-mail and the Internet were their invention but the Internet was alive and
well before Windows 3.x and the Intel 286.
LINUX is a "port" or a rewrite of UNIX which runs on Personal Computers. It
was from the outset a freeware project put together by volunteers much as
KERMIT was and some of the freedos projects. It too is very stable and both
UNIX and LINUX are multi-tasking and multi-user operating systems. There
are several varieties of both LINUX and UNIX, and many of the non-Microsoft
developers like COREL are investing time and money in recent months to
develop applications which will run on both. There is now a project to make
an interface at the operating system level so that WINDOWS applications can
run directly on LINUX, as I understand it it involves writing the standard
WINDOWS API in a way that LINUX can execute. It isn't quite so simple as
being able to take a CD-ROM of your favorite application and loading it on
to a LINUX box though, the disk file system is very different but if
successful you will be able to buy your favorite software in either a LINUX
or WINDOWS format. What this will mean if it succeeds is that WordPerfect
for example will not have to be totally rewritten and reengineered for the
LINUX platform to operate more or less as it does under windows with the
advantage that you will stop getting those damn " program has performed an
illegal operation" messages and if a program crashes it won't bring the
entire system down.
What does this have to do with JAWS and WINDOWS? Nothing at all beyond the
fact that you can configure a Windows computer with an appropriate terminal
programme or a JAWS friendly TELNET application to connect to a UNIX
computer and access it that way or as you do now, each time you browse the
Web or send/receive e-mail. You are almost certainly accessing UNIX
machines.
There are speech and braille methods of operating with UNIX and LINUX but
they are not Henter-Joice products or any other of the commonly known access
technology software products.
