Steve,
Most definitely the first thing you should do with any program, is assure
that all the controls are recognized by JAWS. That will take you a very long
way in terms of hearing the screen.
The whole concept in reclassifying is there are a zillion programming
languages and another zillion makers of plug in modules and controls.
Additionally, a programmer can make their own controls. So, if the class
(Also known as control type name) is ZillionBrothersCheckBox JAWS does not
know what it is. So, with re-classifying, you tell JAWS that in this
application, the ZillionBrothersCheckBox is actually a plain check box. From
then on JAWS can speak the proper info and analyze the state of the control,
in this case is it checked or not.
The big problem comes in with the custom made controls, many of them are
impossible to classify so it gets tricky. In that case scripts can help but
occasionally it is simply not possible to do.
