Hi All
I agree that support for Corel Office 2000 is an extremely
important issue, and I hope that HJ listen to us on this. In
fact, I would go so far as to put support for Corel Office as aa
more important feature than some of the Internet enhancements. I
currently use JFW3326 with a Powerbraille 40.
I am the proprietor of an enterprise in Australia that produces
material in braille, large print and electronic format. I find
that I cannot use Word to generate the files that form the basis
of my production because there are just too many things about
Word that I can't access properly. For example, I cannot tell the
difference between tab characters and spaces, I can't get an
accurate horizontal cursor position in terms of inches or
centimetres, I can't tell whether text is boxed ... the list goes
on. WordPerfect, with its Reveal Codes feature, offers a
potential solution to at least some of these issues. As far as I
can tell, it is almost impossible to buy WordPerfect 8 now, as it
has been replaced by Corel Office 2000, which JFW doesn't
support. So I still use WordPerfect 6.2 for DOS for almost all of
my production because it gives me complete control over all the
aspects of document formatting that I need in order to produce
high-quality material in braille, large print, and electronic
format.
Quite apart from my own needs, Corel's word processor is probably
the second most widely-used on the market, and the lack of
support for the current version is, in my view, a fatal flaw in
any new version of any screen reader.
If it is indeed the case that JFW3.31 will not offer support for
Corel Office, then I probably won't use it at all, despite its
other enhancements.
One thing I have noticed in the short time that I have been using
the beta with braille is that in Word and email programs, the
braille display doesn't track the cursor properly as I type. Once
the braille line is full, it does not move to follow the cursor.
Is that what is meant in the "known problems" section on the HJ
web page when it says that the left-right panning doesn't work
correctly? It certainly makes it very difficult to edit text
properly, and I hope this problem is corrected soon.
Cheers
Bruce Maguire
