Here's the method I use to assign a hotkey.
Go to the start menu by pressing control escape or the Windows key
between the alt and control keys. Let's say you want to create a shortcut
for JAWS. Once yoou're in the start menu, press p for programs, then J for
JFW. It is a submenu so use the right arrow or enter to open it. Go to the
JAWS icon. Press shift-f10 to bring up the context menu. Choose
'properties. In the resulting dialog, tab till you hear "hot key". If you
hear no key designation, type in the letter you would like to use--let's say
j. Windows will provide the alt and control prompt. Just to confirm it,
use insert tab to read the edit field, and you should hear "hot key,
control+alt+j
Ok this dialog. This should do it.
