Hey listers. Just downloaded and installed the newest version of The
Real
player, called Real Player 7. It's pretty much like the other versions of
Real Player g2 you might be familiar with, but this one has a few new
features. It's mostly JFW friendly with a few acceptions. If you download
it, you'll notice that it has a new feature called Take 5. This is a daily
update of the most recent information available, from news, music,
entertainment, and sports. It presents you with a sound clip from each
cattegorry, then the idea is to click on the icon that represents what
you're looking for. For example, the new cd by The Foo Fighters was just
released, so you click on the cd cover to get a sample of all the songs and
a preview of it. This is all good and well for sighted people of course,
but it doesn't work very well with JFW. I'm sure with a few scripting tips,
this addition could be made accessible, if there is text or associated tool
tips in this feature. Also, in the main menu bar, there's a section for
live stations. This can only be accessed when real player 7 is restored to
it's full size, and moving around in the stations is tricky, but it's
possible. In here, you're presented with a tree view, with branches like
rock, pop, spiritual, alternative...you get the idea. To access these
things, I've found that it's best to use your JAWS cursor and when you find
the type of music you want, just root pc to JAWS twice in quick succession
and the branch will open. you're then presented with a list of stations in
that particular cattegory.. it's possible to move around with the up and
down arrow keys to select a station, but when you do, you must root pc to
JAWS twice within quick succession to get the station to launch. This might
be more trouble than it's worth to some people, but I wanted to try it so I
could report my findings here. Keep in mind, this is only my method for
accessing the material but someone may have a better way of doing it. All
of the other menus are accessable just like in previous versions. It would
be nice to have support for real player 7 in the next version of JFw,
or maybe scripts could be written so that we could make this new version a
bit more accessible?
