Kurzweil 1000 or JFW? OR a missing part!

My problem with the K1000 is this. When I install the software, it speaks
me through the installation. But when I click on the icon to use it, I
get the message, speach thread is hung. I put JFW to sleep, but am not
sure if I have some missing parts for the K1000 to work? Or if it is JFW?
Does any one know what the speach thread being hung means, and how to get
it working again. Please help, thanks.
