well, it depends on what you want in a synth. and how much money you
wish to spend. if you wish to emmessage me at the mailto link in my
signature, I can provide you with audio demonstrations of keynote gold
sa which reqquires an accent emulator driver and I can also provide you
with a demo of the accent sa which is fast and requires no driver. so
for instance, if you want clarity but don't like the punchiness of
dectalk, then keynote gold is a good choice. if you just want to work
and get it done fast, accent is good. doubletalk is reasonably priced
and has understandable speech and is quite fast as is accent. By fast
here, I mean that a keypress is actually a keypress and not a signal for
the synth to wake up as it is in dectalk. I love this answer, I get to
say dectalk as much as I want in order to bash it.
Seriously though if you need extra voices and it fits your environment,
dectalk may be the one for you.
There are other synths than the ones I've mentioned here such as the
sounding board and the artic synths and the braille and speak which if
you have one you can use as a synth. so I'd say in the short, list your
needs for a synth, what you are willing or able to spend and find and
listen to them.
