compacting mail folders in outlook express

Dear Listers

Upon entering my Outlook Express 4.723110.1 I am getting a message "there is
a lot of wasted space in your mail folders. Compacting will recover this
wasted space. would you like to compact now?"  Has anyone else come across
this and how does JFW handle it! Can I still access my mail - most
distressing if I got locked out!! Am using JFW 3.30.
