Debts compel family to attempt suicide

BERHAMPUR, July 4: Five members of a family, driven by financial distress,
attempted suicide at Polsara here today. The parents died while their three
children are battling for life at the hospital here.

Ashok Prusty who owned a eatery ran into debt, mostly to private money
lenders and took the drastic step. He is said to have returned from the shop
last night and served a drink laced with some poisonous substance to each
member of the family. It was in the early hours of today that neighbours
detected the strange silence in the house.

Ashok had died while the rest including his wife Damayanti Prusty, two
daughters Srima and Reshma and son Amrit were rushed to the hospital.
Damayanti died on way. Sister of Ashok told reporters that he had once
requested her for money to get his children readmitted to school but never
spoke of the extent of his financial problems.

Interestingly there have been other instances of such attempted mass suicide
in the district earlier. Police sources said in February there were two such
attempts be separate families at Keluapalli and Hinjili areas and in May
last year a similar case was registered at Brahmanchai village. n sns

*At least six devotees were killed and 12 injured in a stampede during a
pilgrimage in the eastern Indian state of Orissa, officials say.*

The victims - including three women - had come to witness an festival for
Lord Jagannath, who is widely revered as a Hindu deity.

They died on Friday afternoon when some devotees suddenly surged forward.

The incident happened in the coastal pilgrimage city of Puri, famous for its
annual Festival of Chariots.

The injured were immediately taken to hospital.

"We are trying to identify the victims," said chief temple administrator SN
Panigrahi.

The BBC's Sanjaya Jena in the state capital, Bhubaneswar, says that at least
one million people from different parts of the state and abroad have
congregated in Puri to take part in a nine-day cultural fiesta.

Our correspondent says that despite the mishap, all the rituals of the Car
festival were smoothly completed with only a short delay.

The incident happened outside the Sri Jagannath temple when statues of the
deities Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra were being taken out of the
temple for a traditional procession.
