Ranchi, July 9: At least 27 people died and 15 were seriously injured when a
bus collided with a trailer on NH-33 near Palu village, about 25km from
here, around 5pm today.

The death count also includes two people on a motorcycle, who were
presumably caught in the accident.

Ranchi sub-divisional officer Manoj Kumar has confirmed only 14 deaths
saying rescue operations were on and more bodies could be trapped in the
accident debris.

Rain is hampering the rescue operation, Kumar added.

The driver of the truck was allegedly drunk. He stopped at Ormanjhi Chowk,
about 5km from the accident spot, and had a drink, said some people who
claimed to have seen the driver at the Chowk.

They had rushed to the accident spot when they heard about the mishap.

The driver of the truck had almost collided with a trolley at Ormanjhi block
Chowk, they added.

While the driver of the speeding bus died on the spot, the man at the wheel
of the trailer was rushed to Apollo Hospital in a critical condition, from
where he was referred to Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS).

The accident occurred when the bus from Ramgarh to Ranchi was negotiating
the hairpin bends along NH-33. It clashed head-on with a loaded trailer
carrying iron beams. The truck was going towards Ramgarh.

The impact of the collision was so strong that the bus and the trailer were
thrown off the road, with the bus dangling on the side of the hilly road.

The impact left parts of the bus and blood strewn all over the area with
only the bus wheels on the road.

Witnesses said there was a deafening noise when the vehicles collided.

Raju, a passenger in the bus, said the mishap impact threw him off the seat.
He was trapped below a seat until help came in the form of local residents.

"I passed out and do not remember anything. I can vaguely remember people
shouting and a pair of hands pulling me out," said Raju, a student of Zakir
Hussain Institute at Doranda.

He was among the lucky few to have escaped with minor injuries.

After the accident, a bus from Dhanbad carrying passengers of a marriage
party to the capital was stopped and 13 of the injured persons were taken to
RIMS.

The injured have been admitted to the emergency OPD, where four passengers
succumbed to injuries.

The bodies have not been identified yet.

The driver of the bus carrying the marriage party, Anil Ram, also sustained
injuries as a result of the accident.

A mob beat him up and pelted him with stones after taking him to be the
driver of the city bus involved in the accident. Ram limped into the RIMS
emergency ward after some of the injured in the accident came to his rescue.

The driver of the marriage party bus told *The Telegraph* that the bus and
trailer were speeding and collided at a bend on the treacherous *ghati*.
