Ranchi, Oct 4 (IANS) Soaring prices of vegetables due to incessant rain here
has put housewives in trouble as they struggle to manage their budgets.
Price of green vegetables and onions have jumped more than 50 percent in the
past fortnight. Jharkhand has been witnessing non-stop rain for the past two
weeks, badly affecting transportation of vegetables.
Onion prices have jumped to Rs.26 from Rs.16 kg, cauliflower is selling at
Rs.40 against Rs. 28 a kg earlier, ladyfinger at Rs.32 kg, up from Rs.20 per
kg, and tomato at Rs.25 a kg compared to Rs.16 per kg. Green bananas are
selling for Rs.20 a kg, up from Rs.12 a kg.
'Rising prices have forced us to re-plan our budget. We have to compromise on
green vegetables as it is indeed becoming difficult to meet the price demand,'
said Shahsi Prabha, a housewife.
Echoing her, Suman Devi said: 'Green vegetables are going beyond our reach
due to rising prices.'
'The supply of onions and other green vegetables has been badly affected by
the rain. Prices will go down only when the weather improves and transportation
become normal,' said Harinarayan, a vegetable wholesaler.
