*Man lynched in Jharkhand for seeking orderly queue
25 Jan 2008, 0219 hrs IST ,TNN
Hazaribagh: A man who tried to organise a queue for kerosene lost his
life in one of the remotest villages of Hazaribagh district in Jharkhand on
Thursday. The fault of Suraj Mahto, 35, was that he asked another man not to
jump the queue.
Suraj Mahto and others had been waiting in the queue at Kumardiha village
since 4 am when suddenly some people broke the queue. Suraj Mahto tried to
convince a villager, Harli, saying that it would create problems for others.
Angered by the advice, another consumer, Tila Mahto and his father-in-law
Gobardhan Mahto had an argument with Suraj Mahto.
Before anyone could react, Suraj Mahto was mercilessly beaten by the duo. An
injured Suraj Mahto was taken to hospital where he was declared dead.
The death highlighted the grim situation in remote areas where kerosene is
the only source of fuel for cooking and lighting of lamps. In the rural
areas, people queue up in front of PDS shops before dawn to collect their
quota of two litres of kerosene.
Police, who registered a case of murder, arrested Gobardhan Mahto, but his
son-in-law is at large.
