*Heroic 1857 War of Independence in R-Day parade*
New Delhi (PTI): Images of heroic struggle of 1857 was on display here as
the country celebrated the Republic Day in the 150th year of the First War
of Independence.
Uttar Pradesh came out with legendary freedom fighter Rani Lakshmi Bai in
battle attire riding a horse and her trusted lieutenants fighting the
British formed the crux of Uttar Pradesh's tableau.
Recalling the epic war in which the 'Rani of Jhansi' attained martyrdom, the
tableau depicts Lakshmi Bai's reliable aide Ghuas Khan with his gun, "Karak
Bijli" in the rear, followed by freedom fighters fighting with British Army.
Haryana depicted a heart-rending scene from its struggle in 1857 when
thousands of women and children jumped into a well in a bid to save
themselves from the Britishers who completely destroyed Rohnat village in
Hisar district.
Larger-than-life statues of freedom fighters Raja Nahar Singh, Rao Tula Ram,
Abdur Rahman and Lala Hukam Chand Jain were also tastefully depicted in
Hayarana's tableau.
The float also had various scenes from their 1857 struggle, including
revolutionaries being blown off by canons by the British soldiers.
Punjab, Jharkhand, Railways and CPWD selected various leaves from the
indpendence struggle to pay tributes to those national icons who sacrificed
their lives for freedom.
A huge bust of fiery revolutionary Bhagat Singh, whose birth centenary is
being celebrated this year, was the theme for Punjab's float. It also
depicted the trial of Singh and his two friends.
Jharkhand selected the early 20th century tribal revolutions, 'Jatra' and
'Tana Bhagat' movements, for its tableau.
The tableau by Railways depicted was a tribute to the freedom struggle.
Mahatma Gandhi along with other freedom fighters like Abul Kalam Azad,
Sarojini Naidu and Jawaharlal Nehru were shown being arrested in the Bombay
station in 1942.
Another incident shown in the tableau is the protest against the Simon
Commission.
Paying rich tributes to the 60 years of Indpendence, the CPWD came out with
a huge replica of flower-becked Red Fort.
It also has a floral depiction of an Indian holding the tricolour.
The rear part of the tableau showed children paying homage by singing songs
in the grandeur of Red Fort.
