Seminar on Alternative Development at Ranchi

An Interactive Seminar to be held on April 12 & 13 where seven outstanding 
speakers from across the nation will share their views on participatory 
development models for us to interact, examine and adapt.

In order to disseminate the information, knowledge and experiences regarding 
alternative development practices, JADFO is organizing a two-day seminar on 
12th ? 13th April 2008 at Ranchi, Jharkhand. Eminent thinkers and practitioners 
of alternative development like Medha Patekar, Aseem Srivastawa, Vandana Shiva, 
Arun Kumar, Banwari Lal Sharma, Rahul and Manali, Mihir Shah, Yogeshwar Kumar 
along with grassroots people who implement the alternative development models 
have been invited to address the Seminar and share their thought with us.

The Objective of the two-day seminar would be to spread the idea of alternative 
development praxis among the people and to start the process at the earliest. 
It is expected that even the small beginning made in this direction would 
eventually turn out to be a people?s movement, which can bring the needed 
policy decisions in this direction in Jharkhand.
The galaxy of speakers include :

Dr. Vandana Shiva from Dehra Dun - A physicist, ecologist, activist, editor, 
and author of many books. She has established Navdanya, a movement for 
biodiversity conservation and farmers? rights. She directs the Research 
Foundation for Science, Technology and Natural Resource Policy and runs organic 
farms in Dehra Dun.
Dr. Aseem Shrivastava from Delhi - A Doctorate in Economics from the University 
of Massachusetts at Amherst, U.S.A. He taught Economics at Universities in 
India and the U.S. for many years and most recently taught Philosophy at Nordic 
College, Norway. He writes on issues of contemporary concern for a number of 
magazines and periodicals including Outlook, Z, and Counterpunch.
Yogeshwar Kumar from Uttaranchal ? A civil engineer from IIT, Delhi and a 
pioneer in constructing community owned micro-hydels in Uttrakhand, Meghalaya 
and Jammu and Kashmir. His methodology of stimulating community participation 
in all aspects of micro-hydropower construction and maintenance has been an eye 
opener for people and ideally suited for a State like Jharkhand.
Dr. Arun Kumar of JNU, Delhi - Has been teaching Economics in Jawaharlal Nehru 
University since 1984. He has been the Chairperson of the Centre for Economic 
Studies and Planning of JNU and is currently the Coordinator of the EXIM 
Bank-JNU Library in Economics. He has been the Vice President and Acting 
President of the Indian Academy of Social Sciences (ISSA). He has been working 
on various aspects of Globalization and on building a framework of Alternative 
Economic Policies in India. He authored the Alternative Budgets for 1993-94 and 
1994-95.
Dr. Rahul Verman & Dr. Manali Chakrabarti from I.I.T. Kanpur- Dr. Rahul Varman 
is a Professor in the Department of Industrial Management at IIT Kanpur He 
works at the interface of organisations, labour and the third world. Of late he 
has been teaching about globalisation and its alternatives. He has worked with 
trade unions and workers? cooperatives and his recent work has been on 
alternatives to corporate organisations,
Dr. Manali Chakrabarti, an economic historian, is a senior fellow of Indian 
Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) and is an adjunct faculty at 
Institute of Development Studies Kolkata. Her research interests include - 
industrial clusters as an alternative to large organisation, workers? 
cooperative and the industrial history of India.
Dr.Banwari Lal Sharma from Allahabad - A mathematician of world repute who has 
devoted himself completely to problems of sustainable development, food 
scarcity and hunger security, water conservation and rights of people to be 
employed in meaningful tasks.
Medha Patkar from Gujarat ? Medha has gained fame through the Narmada Bachao 
Andolan making her a known name throughout India. She is one of the recipients 
of Right Livelihood Award for the year 1991. Medha Patkar has received numerous 
other awards, including the Deena Nath Mangeshkar Award, Mahatma Phule Award, 
Goldman Environment Prize, Green Ribbon Award for Best International Political 
Campaigner by BBC, and the Human Rights Defender?s Award from Amnesty 
International.
