1. IIT-s when started under Nehru's initiative were prestigious institutions,
with merit as sole critereon, and the British, American, Russian and German
technological expertise was utilised as collaboration for IIT-s at Kharagpur,
Kanpur, Powai(Bombay) and Madras respectively.
2. With the dilution of the standards by introducing reservation, and
admission of students who do not qualify by merits and who are a drag on other
students progressing in the curriculum, disgusted Directors like Inidiresan
resigned when they could not maintain the meritorious status of IIT-s in
International arena.
Political exigencies made Govt. to instruct IIT-s to provide extra coaching
to these studies to come up to the higher levels needed to cope up with others.
But you can only take the horse to water. The SC/ST students enjoying "free
lunch" throughout and their "Godfathers" at Delhi protecting them from any
stringent action, took the studies lightly and themselves brought this
situation to themselves.
3. If the SC/ST could not reach the level of others in course of 60 years of
reservation in admissions, jobs and promotions under roster system etc., how
many more generations need the crutches for these groups? Arjun Singh has
further worsened the already bad situation created by VP Singh, by activating
Mandal Commission based on an ambiguous categorisation of OBC-s based on some
antiquated census during British regime.
The Centre has not yet acted on Supreme Court's directive to positively
identify the various groups eligible under OBC States like TN covering almost
90% of the population under OBC and minorities!!
4.The only solution to solve the problem would be to abolish all reservations
and give full financial assistance to the non-creamy layers of all communities
for the studies, which would instil a sense of competition and responsibility
among the students.
Indian students except IIT-s and IIM-s have already been facing international
derecognition and re-examinations in several developed Countries where our
"paper qualified" doctors and engineers are working as ware-house boys
incognito, as local govt-s would not accept their degrees- many fake degree
holders from Bihar were identified and deported earlier. Now IIT-ians too would
face such an ignominous situation when facing interviewers abroad. IIM little
later.
If the Country is to progress only merit should be the consideration. The
only way to help still downtrodden would be additional coaching and financial
help, to come up by their efforts, but not by stilts and crutches.

SITE OF DISPUTE: IIT-Delhi has asked at least 20 students to leave because of
poor studies.
New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, (IIT-Delhi) may be
heading for a messy quota controversy.
The National Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes has sought
an explanation from the director of the institute after 12 undergraduate SC/ST
students were asked to leave because of poor performance.
The 12 students have told the commission they were discriminated against and
instead of being given special coaching they were asked to attend extra
curricular activities.
A student has alleged that a professor at the institute told him said he
wasn't doing well in his studies because he was from the SC/ST category.
"We will investigate the students' allegations and then make a decision,"
said Buta Singh, chairperson of the SC/ST Commission.
The institute's deputy director, Prof Bijendra Jain, rejected the allegations
and insisted that the students were asked to leave solely because of their poor
performance.
"If certain students cannot perform then we cannot have them," said Jain.
"The commission has the authority to seek an explanation from IIT-Delhi why so
many SC/ST students have been asked to leave.
Interestingly, the institute has never asked so many students to leave
because of poor performance. "Unfortunately, this year the number of students
who have been asked to leave because of poor performance is little to large.
Generally, the number is five to eight but the total number of students who
have been asked to leave is around 20. It is unfortunate that 12 of those 20
students belong to the SC/ST," said Jain.
Jain said IIT-Delhi does its best to help all students in their studies.
"Before they enter IIT-Delhi, SC/ST students receive coaching in Physics,
Chemistry and Maths. At the end of every semester and sometimes in the middle
of semesters we monitor the progress of all students."
The institute had in fact lowered the benchmark for SC/ST students. The 12
students who complain of harassment refused to speak on camera but said they
and the 500 other SC/ST students of IIT-Delhi would be forced to take to the
streets if the commission fails to help them.
