Dear Ashok, This has been the Nature of the Indian State since long. If the Police or the Govt. agencies want to cover up their blunders they just cry 'Foul' in the name of Naxal / Maoists etc. In the same edition of Down To Earth there is a story "Livelihood for Sale" by Madhumita Dutta. Unfortunately I am not geyying the link for that. But in short it is about the low cost for Iron ore to benefit the POSCO Steel Plant in Orissa. The figures are like " 600 million tonnes of Iron Ore should fetch Rs 432,000 crore' ( Rs.7,200/- per tonne is the International price of Iron Ore.) POSCO will pay a total of Rs.1,620 crore @Rs. 27/- per tonne for the High quality Iron Ore of Kandadhar hills in Orissa. The Agreement is for 30 years extendable by another 20 years for conducting the loot.
POSCO has asked for lease of 6,209 ha of land and awaiting forest Diversion clearance from the Supreme Court. POSCO has also been ensured 150 billion litres of water supply from Mahanadi barrage at Jobra, which will affect 80,000 ha of farmland in five districts of Orissa and drinking water requirements of Cuttack and Bhubaneshwar. The April protest march by people was all about saving these resources which were giving them bread. They were all branded as Naxals and Maoists as WB Govt did in Sangur and Nandigram. The opening sentence of this lady journalist Ms Dutta's Article is Little did I know that the seven of us would be branded "Maoists" when we set off for a protest rally against POSCO in Orissa on April 1 (2008). Govt is bent upon finishing poor people and farmers by transferring their earning resources. Branding as "Maoists" provide them as esiest tool. Money making through purchase of hardware for Police action against them adds to the interest in Naxal elimination programmes. It appears that the ' Global War on Terrorism ' has something very sinister in it. It came from the west who want a Global empire for themselves and through their control over Media and taming the Corrupt Governments want to enslave entire world. They have been successful in taming most of the corrupt governments during past including the one we have in India and slowly but certainly pushing their all efforts to dismount the rights of the people even to the extent that local poor communities fighting for their justful rights to sustain their bare livings would be termed as Terrorists tomorrow...!
