Yet another incidence of corporate sponsored violence in Orissa and this time it is the tribals of Maliguda who had been facing the threats to their lives for months now from the goons of Kankada amba. Yesterday when they attacked they didn't spare children, they molested the women and beat up everyone and anyone they could lay their hands on. One such, a seventy year old man is now lying in the hospital with a fractured leg, his son and wife said he was sitting inside his home when he heard a ruckus outside. When he went out to find out the matter he was severely beaten up by the goons who beat him up mercilessly till his legs gave away. Right next to him in the hospital is a boy in his late teens with a huge bandage around his head. The goons had struck him with rods and sticks. Many young girls have suffered wounds all over their bodies. They were sexually assaulted also and the goons had torn off their clothes and then thrashed them with sticks. One of the injured girls was as young as 9 years. Arjun Khillo, a local anti Hindalco activist says it was a planned attack at a time when most of the youth had gone to a nearby town to make arrangements for the meeting on the 22nd. Despite the attack the villagers have resolved to hold the meeting tomorrow and stregthen their resistance to Hindalco's proposed mining. - Surya (in Koraput)
