1. Nowhere in the World water for industrial purposes is given free of cost.
Even water for domestic consumption in most Cities are charged on ad hoc or
metered basis.

However, Indian Govt. as well as most of the States have allowed drawing of
water through deep tubewells by multinationals like Coca Cola and Pepsi, and
selling besides the products, even such water at prohibitive costs. Billions
are repatriated to US by selling such water and soft drinks.

2. The Plachimada Coke plant came to limelight in 2003 when the wells in the
area dried up and villagers had to evacuate for want of water and the pollution
of agricultural land by the slurry sold as "fertilisers for long!! The Kerala
farmers agitated and got the plant closed down in 2004 though the heavily
bribed Politicians of both factions did not take any action and even the Courts
did not agree to demands for closure.

3. Now, there are reports that two other plants too have been closed in U.P.

4. Sunita Narayan had exposed the toxicity levels of the soft drinks having
toxins far in excess of the standards accepted internationally. But the bribed
Politicians and Scientists of the Govt. revised the toxic levels acceptable
upwards in favour of the Companies.

5. There should be sustained agitations and movements against exploitation of
water by these Companies esp. without any payment, and demand closure of all
the plants in India due to environmental pollution.

6. Water and Air are Nature's gift to the humans. These should not be turned
over to the Businesses for exploitation of the people, by selling water from
impounded locations

Dear All,

The topic is taken from Corporate Accountability Group basically established
and working for most part of it in the US but they challenge the US companies
like Coke, Pepsi, Nestle operating in India on the ground of misusing and
polluting water resources in India as in US and other countries. I am a member
of this Group for some time and I have been finding their communication and
activities a bit to my liking on a subject close to my heart i.e. WATER. Think
Outside the Bottle group has made a film on water which is described below the
trailor of which can be seen in

Since Water is a serious issue I am forwarding this to attract attention to
this cause.
