On an issue we discussed earlier with friends from Tamizhagam.. Have met two people from Tamil Nadu in last few months. Both agree that real wages in the state shot up 100% after NREGA (100 day work) began. There is also pressure from Kerala- where wages are higher in the areas neighbouring there. Certain people are even cheating the land owners by employing one person but taking wages for larger numbers. There is tension for middle farmers and combine harvester machines are being hired out by companies/ large landowners. Current labour rate for men is now Rs 90 per day in North Arcot. My data was very old it seems and the recent developments have passed me by.. Prabir
