Error while unmarshalling empty elements

I have an element as follows in binding file
<value style="element" name="id" get-method="getId" set-method="setId"
ordered="false" usage="optional"/>
Its a long datatype.
In XML it shows up as empty tag
<ns1:id/>
While unmarshalling I am getting NumberFormatException.
If i remove the blank tag it works fine.
Same for other datatypes.
