It's possible to do this type of combination, and I've actually implemented it for one commercial client. The work I did for them is proprietary, but you can look at how the Castor data binding works with Axis for a good idea of how to accomplish this.

Once I get beta 4 done I may reimplement this in a way that can be used by anyone, assuming the client doesn't have any objection.
