I just tried the following binding file with your sample XML:

<binding direction="input">
  <mapping name="employee" class="Employee">
    <value style="attribute" name="empcode" field="empcode" />
    <structure name="record" usage="optional" />
  </mapping>
</binding>

and it worked for me... maybe you had the "value" tag in the wrong place
(it should be right underneath "mapping")?
