Ismael Juma commented on KAFKA-6223:
------------------------------------

[~s...@apache.org], the Kafka version that people choose to use is rarely
relevant to the Scala version. We do feature releases every 4 months, but users
upgrade brokers much more slowly as Kafka is a critical infrastructure
component and users would typically want to test a particular version in their
environment before upgrading. So, unless the user needs a feature, performance
enhancement or fix, they will schedule upgrades at a regular cadence (every
year or two would probably be common, but we still hear of users running 0.8.x,
for example).

When it comes to maintained versions, we typically main trunk and the last
release branch most actively, but older releases do get critical fixes. For
example, 0.10.0, 0.10.1 and 0.10.2 received a Jetty upgrade recently.

I think a simple rule is the easiest, so I'd suggest we keep the most recent
release of the 3 most recent release branches in the mirrors and delete all the
other ones.

> To reduce the load on the ASF mirrors, projects are required to delete old
> releases [1]
> Please can you remove all non-current releases?
> It's unfair to expect the 3rd party mirrors to carry old releases.
> Note that older releases can still be linked from the download page, but such
> links should use the archive server at:
> https://archive.apache.org/dist/kafka/
> A suggested process is:
> + Change the download page to use archive.a.o for old releases
> + Delete the corresponding directories from
> {{https://dist.apache.org/repos/dist/release/kafka/}}
> e.g. {{svn delete https://dist.apache.org/repos/dist/release/kafka/0.8.0}}
> Thanks!
