Isn't the harm here that we ignore the case brought up in the `AbstractHerder` Javadocs where the group can disappear and the generation is reset? With this change, we'd end up ignoring all new status updates when that happens. I'm happy to take a look at this if the bug is coming up frequently in the wild.
