Right now, we have multiple layers of locking when it comes to updating metrics
and sensors and it has become increasingly hard to reason about its
thread-safety. Hence I created this ticket to track the effort of refactoring
Sensor access patterns to make it easy to use and ensure thread safety at all
circumstances.
