As we are very short in time, I did start to work on a second PR for the internal KS changes (https://github.com/apache/kafka/pull/18115) -- this PR depends on your PR, and we might need to align both at some point. To speed things up, and if ok with you, I might also start to push changes into your PR directly, so we can merge it asap, to unblock the second PR. Sorry for the rush, but you just picked this ticket with a little bit of "bad timing" given the release deadline...
