Both the source and checkpoints connectors expose metrics. Now that we have
KIP-877, they should use that mechanism instead of custom logic.
This work requires a KIP as names of metrics exposed via KIP-877 will not match
the current names. The KIP should introduce a mechanism to optionally use
KIP-877, and plan to deprecate and finally remove the current metrics in a
future Kafka release.
