Thanks @mjsax (and sorry I didn't see your comment before). The ticket indicates that it was introduced in 2.5 (https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/KAFKA-9127 , link for convenience). IIUC, in 2.4, we would needlessly create StreamThreads, but we would still be able to process global-only topologies.
