Thanks for the contribution. Unfortunately, any changes to public APIs, including configuration parameters or changes in behavior, will require a KIP to be written, discussed and approved before this change can be committed for the subsequent minor Apache Kafka release. (Bug fixes or new behavior that is backward compatible do not require a KIP and can be backported to older versions.) Overall, I think the design is good as long as the SMT has the same behavior with existing configurations. One of the benefits of Connect SMTs is that you can develop your own implementations, package them as a custom plugin, and use them in your own Connect installations.
