On my UK Windows system file.encoding is set to "Cp252" - which does not maintain backward compatibilty. So rather than use the above system property as the default, I've updated the code in the 2.0 branch to use the value of a new jmeter property: sampleresult.default.encoding with a default of "ISO-8859-1" if it is not defined.
