No, it's not that unique. I've encountered it too.

The behaviour you mention should be considered a bug, I guess :-(

Can you please file it? I'll try to find the time to solve it.

Look for SOAP/XML-RPC Request sampler. It's been around since 1.7 or 1.8

and I think it does exactly what you need.
