Actually I have mentioned exactly this:

If the command works Java is installed and you will also know the version of
Java.  We need Java 1.5 update 7 or above.  If the Java version is below 1.5
update 7, the script for starting JMeter needs some tweaking.

If this text is giving impression that only Java 1.5 update 7 is needed,
then I will think of changing the text to make it more precise.
