Summary: backbone and trace for nucleic acids

Initial Comment:
Chime inteprets nucleic acid backbone as a solid cylinder between
phosphorus atoms on adjacent nucleotides. in fact, this more
closely resembles a trace, which in proteins connects adjacent alpha
carbons.

a 'truer' nucleic acid backbone would include all atoms between
adjacent phosphorus atoms:
P (of unit 1)
O5* (of unit 1)
C5* (of unit 1)
C4* (of unit 1)
C3* (of unit 1)
O3* (of unit 1)
P (of unit 2)
...

just as a protein backbone includes all atoms between adjacent
alpha carbons:
CA (of unit 1)
C (of unit 1)
N (of unit 2)
CA (of unit 2)
...

there is some question whether the nucleic backbone should include
the entire sugar ring, or not. I tend to favor the latter.
