Hello All,

I am writing to inquire if there are any plans to support the
icedtea/GCJ java plugin. Currently, when I try to run the Jmol applet,
with this plugin in 64 Ubuntu 8.04, I get:

  PIPE: appletviewer read: instance-6449-2
  PIPE: appletviewer read: width 300
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NullPointerException
        at sun.applet.PluginMain.start(PluginMain.java:211)
        at sun.applet.PluginMain.main(PluginMain.java:73)
GCJ PLUGIN: thread 0x6228e0: plugin_out_pipe_callback
GCJ PLUGIN: thread 0x6228e0: plugin_out_pipe_callback: appletviewer has stopped.

and the only thing that is displayes is a grey box. This is with
whatever version is running on the sourceforge.net demo page.

Interestingly, I built the latest Jmol checked out from SVN with
OpenJDK and it seemed to work OK, but I can't seem to get the
OpenJDK/IcedTea plugin installed properly on my system, and am not
sure if this is even a smart course of action.

Any ideas on how hard it would be to get this working with the
IcedTea/GCJ plugin? I read a post on this list a couple years back
that the major hold-up was Swing and AWT support, but it seems like
that situation has improved immensly between now and then.

BTW, forgive me if I got any technical details confused -- it's been
several years since I did serious Java coding, and that was all
server-side J2EE :-(.

Thanks,
Tim
