Summary: Collada 3D format

Initial Comment:
Sun's Project Wonderland is an Open Source project to create an immersive
on-line environment that can be used for meetings or teaching purposes etc.
Modules can be imported into the on-line worlds in KMZ/DAE Collada formats.
These 3D formats are Open Source arrangements that have been incorporated into
many 3D packages and support textures/surfaces etc.

Since these Collada formats seem to be the XML replacement to VRML, it would be
useful to have Jmol export in this format.

Details of the schema are available from www.collada.org

Angel,

we too have struggled to come to grips with the 500+ pages of their manual
!!

We have looked at Blender (blender.org) and Google Sketchup for software
to generate 3D data and found some "simple" example files in the Google 3D
warehouse.
The free Sketchup does not export a Collada file but if you upload to
their warehouse they convert it overnight.

Look for propanone or benzene for example.

The manual suggests it is possible to have a sphere and cylinder but all
the sample files I've found contain hundreds of vertex data points
instead.

This may be OK for JVXL but for a simple molecule with 10 atoms having to
generate thousands of data points would be a real pain....

For VRML you define a macro to generate these I gather but for Collada you
have to write them all out it seems!

Message:
Robert, as I did some work on the existing implementation of VRML export,
and played a bit with X3D export, I'd be rather interested on this.
However, the official doc does not give me enough clues as to what the
format must be (it's way too complex). We need to focus on the minimal
framework of the DAE file format and on the specs for spheres and
cylinders.
Also, I'd need a simple DAE viewer for testing. I've tried ColladaLoader
but it does not run in my system (seems to be due to need of OpenGL which
by PCs don't support). I found SwirlViewer which seem to work, but I have
been unable to write a test DAE file that displays in it.
