It was just something I was playing with. I'm not happy with it -- it seems
to slow down rendering immensely. Once again shows how Miguel's careful
attention to shading in Jmol makes it the success it is.
I've fixed it:

but to do this right, I need to create a transparent background for an
off-screen canvas, draw the atom to that once, and then copy that to a
specific location on the main canvas in HTML5. Right now it is
recalculating the shades each time the atom is drawn.
