I completely agree.

I am trying to think of a more general solution that can be fit into the
existing script compiler/interpreter.

I am trying to avoid a major redesign/rewrite of the script interpreter
because it would be a *lot* of work and it would introduce *many* bugs.

In this particular context, I believe that the problem set is:

  all of the tokens containing <= 3 alpha-numeric characters
