I have noticed this repaint behavior as well.  I do not think it is a result of 
the message callback directly, though.  all of my 'non-visible' functions based 
on the content of a callback work without trouble.

OSX browsers in general have fairly ugly repaint issues - especially with the 
Jmol applet (try scrolling a Jmol Web page and you will see what I mean).  lots 
of flashing, hiccupping, etc.
