That seems to be browser idiosyncrasies. My Firefox/Win does not do 
that.
However, my experience is that Firefox tends more and more to not 
render applets  when they are not viewable (e.g. they are farther 
down the page). The applet starts rendering when you scroll down. I 
have never seen an already rendered applet disappear when scrolling.
I have seen something related, though: if you hide the applet by 
reducing its size to zero, Firefox (and others) destroys the applet, 
so that when you redisplay it it is created anew, has no memory of 
the model orientation and style you left. In IE the applet is 
redisplayed as it was left.
