I should have been more specific:

1) use the signed applet.
2) write myFiles.jmol  (possibly from the popup menu)

This will create one zip file that any applet (signed or unsigned) can read
that will have ALL necessary files within it.
Or, if you don't want to save all the files in one and just want the script,
then use

  write xxxxxx.spt

1. Suggestion:
Using the signed applet
(
jmolInitialize("jmol/",true);
instead of
jmolInitialize("jmol/");
)
did not change anything. By the way I'm developing on localhost. So
there should be no issues with accessing URLs from anywhere else.
