The current version of Chrome (39) runs the Jmol Java applet in OS X. This version of Chrome was apparently released November 18, 2014. Previously, Chrome for OS X was 32 bit while Java 7 required a 64 bit browser.

For JSmol (no Java), Chrome significantly outperforms Firefox and Safari. (Internet Explorer and Opera are unacceptably slow for JSmol.) It was inconvenient to recommend Chrome to people for JSmol sites, but then to have to tell them to use another browser for Java. This problem is now gone.

I have just updated
http://proteopedia.org/w/Installing_and_enabling_Java
with details and snapshots of Chrome's permission dialogs.

During early to mid-2014, Chrome also had problems running Java in Windows. These problems seem to have been fixed.

Chrome can now run even old websites that still use the *unsigned* Jmol Java applet just fine, in both OS X and Windows.
