I have been using firstglance.jmol.org in java mode (Jmol_S) without
problems in Firefox 45.0.1, Mac OS 10.10.5 Yosemite. My Java was 1.8.0_*73*.
(FirstGlance is using Jmol 14.4.1_2015.12.23, but the problem described
below also happens at http://chemapps.stolaf.edu/jmol/jsmol/jsmol.htm
using Jmol 14.4.4_2016.*03.14*)
Today I updated to Java 1.8.0_*77*. Now Jmol fails to run in Firefox,
saying in the upper left corner of the Jmol region "Error: click for
details". When I click A window opens saying ClassNotFoundException
JmolApplet.class.
Also *Java verification fails at java.com*, producing a blank gray
rectangle with no error message. There is no error message in the Java
console either.
However, Jmol_S/Java still runs fine in*Safari *with Java 1.8.0_77.
And Java 1.8.0_*77* runs Jmol_S fine in Firefox 45.0.1 in *Windows 7*.
So I *uninstalled Java* using the 2 sudo terminal commands specified at
java.com. I then installed Java 1.8.0_*73* (the version that was working
before I upgraded Java).
But still Java_S/Jmol and Java verification fail to work in Firefox.
I booted my computer on a SuperDuper backup from before the Java
upgrade. Firefox 45.0.1 runs Jmol_S/Java just fine there with Java
1.8.0_*73*.
So somehow the upgrade to Java 1.8.0_*77* changed my system so it fails
in Firefox, and that change survives uninstalling Java and installing
the version of Java that worked before (and still works on my backup).
Yeesh!
Any suggestions?
Is anyone else using OS X with Java 1.8.0_77 able to get Jmol_S to run
in Firefox?
