I absolutely agree, not implementing vrml properly in the various 3d
modelling/printing packages has been annoying me for a long time. Getting
rid of high level objects is definitely the way to go, so I'm glad you're
not going back to them.

I'll get on to the Blender developers and see what they come back with.
There has always been something not quite right about their wrl/x3d
importer, some things which would load in seconds in MeshLab would just
hang in Blender. Their importer was supposed to have been improved to
import better models for the NIH 3D print exchange (I can't  remember the
url of web site I read this on just now) so they I'm  hoping they'll  be
sympathetic.

I'll let you know how I get on.
