My 2 cents worth, always give your resume out as a PDF.
Never assume people have Word (e.g. .doc), many tech people don't use
Windows for example (yes, office is on Mac, and there are viewers) but don't
assume.

If your document is viewed in a different program, there is no guarantee the
format is as you designed it.

And as one small benefit, people can't easily change or reformat it when in
PDF format.
