I'm afraid my info. might be a bit outdated.. Stil, no harm in sharing.

I tried both XGL and Beryl on 6.06. Found them to be quite similar.
Beryl had more config. apps and whatnots, some of the features were
faster on it. (the desktop zoom thingy comes to mind). But it was a
headache to setup, especially on my laptop's ATI.

My advice, if this is your first shiny-ubuntu trial, go for XGL. its
very well documented on the ubuntu-wiki.
