I believe that the german equivalent of "RE:" is "AW:", and many replies 
from German-speakers use this instead.

Looking at the mailing list archive, it looks like the list server software 
doesn't know about this....

The normal way is to simply answer (reply to) the existing message. This 
should append a "Re: " in front of the subject line which is recognised by 
the mail archiver as the continuation of the thread.

Note thought that messages are archived on a month by month basis and that 
threads are broken across months.
