Ken,

We are using Apache, tomcat and JOnAS.  Apache is for serving static HTML
content and for SSL, tomcat for jsp custom tags.  Those custom tags talk to
JOnAS which talks to the database.  I think this is probably very common
setup.  I am not sure if anyone has tried, but a good set of example ejb's
can be found in the Java Pet Store example at
http://www.javasoft.com/j2ee/download.html#blueprints
With that you will find several design guidlines, etc to help you get
started.
