Maybe the solution for us is to switch to Enhydra (we should be app server
independent anyway). Currently we are running on combination of Jetty with
Jonas with gives us nice small footprint embedded J2EE like solution, but
just to get the feel about the problem. What would it take for Jonas itself
to support .war files?

No, JOnAS doesn't supports itself directly web application and .war files,
and there are no
plans to do it within the scope of ObjectWeb. As you mention this support is
provided
(through a partnership between Enhydra and ObjectWeb) by Enhydra Enterprise
which integrates
Tomcat, JOnAS) and a lot of other stuff.
